Regiões geográficas mineiras
As regiões geográficas intermediárias e imediatas, em Minas Gerais e em todo o Brasil, constituem a divisão geográfica regional do país, segundo a composição elaborada pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE).
As regiões geográficas imediatas são agrupamentos de municípios que têm como principal referência a rede urbana e possuem um centro urbano local como base, mediante a análise do IBGE. Para sua elaboração foram levadas em consideração a conexão de cidades próximas através de relações de dependência e deslocamento da população em busca de bens, prestação de serviços e trabalho. As regiões intermediárias, por sua vez, são agrupamentos de regiões imediatas que são articuladas através da influência de uma metrópole, capital regional ou centro urbano representativo dentro do conjunto.
Foram instituídas em 2017 para a atualização da divisão regional brasileira e correspondem a uma revisão das antigas mesorregiões e microrregiões, respectivamente, que estavam em vigor desde o quadro criado em 1989. Essa configuração deve ser utilizada para fins de planejamento e estimativas.
A divisão de 2017 teve o objetivo de abranger as transformações relativas à rede urbana e sua hierarquia ocorridas desde as divisões precedentes, devendo ser usada para ações de planejamento e gestão de políticas públicas e para a divulgação de estatísticas e estudos do IBGE. Na configuração precedente, houve em primeiro momento o agrupamento dos municípios em mesorregiões para depois serem separados em microrregiões. Na divisão de 2017, ocorreu o contrário, visto que primeiro ocorreu a divisão em regiões geográficas imediatas para depois se obter um agrupamento destas em regiões geográficas intermediárias.
Então hoje Minas Gerais é formada por 13 regiões geográficas intermediárias que abrangem suas 70 regiões geográficas imediatas e que por sua vez englobam 853 municípios, sendo o quarto estado com a maior área territorial e o segundo em quantidade de habitantes, com uma população de 20 539 989 habitantes em 2022.
